3 Lessons We Can Learn From Oliver Anthony

Whilst I’m not a country music fan, there is indeed something very moving about his songs, especially ‘Rich Men North Of Richmond’.

Here is what we can learn from him:

He is ‘an overnight success’ with no formal singing training

I love that his singing is, to quote him, ‘a bit rough around the edges’.

Imagine what he would have deprived the world of if he decided that he needed formal training before releasing his first song :-).

His music is raw and honest. It speaks to people and moves them. That’s what counts.

𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 #𝟏: Free yourself from the belief that you need formal training. For sure you can pursue that but put yourself out there now, raw, from the heart and trust that that is all that is necessary for you to have an impact.

He doesn’t want to tour or do stadiums. He just wants to make music and touch people’s lives.

𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 #𝟐: Our ego wants us to have fame and recognition. But it’s the wrong thing to strive for. There is no freedom in that. Strive for being fully you instead. Strive for freely sharing your creative process, the one behind the ego. God speaks to us through our creative process and if we are open, it flows through us. For me, there is something beautifully magical about the process of honest writing from the heart. I feel more connected and more fulfilled.

I let go of that for a while. I was busy getting a deeper layer of clarity about who I am and how I can best serve. It’s not easy to get it right. Now that’s solidly in place for me, I’m so happy to be back to writing more – and finally to properly focusing on the books I want to write!

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven, a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted…”.

He gave an interview to Joe Rogan but doesn’t want to give any more interviews. He said “I’m just going to give this one interview to set things straight and then I’m going back to making music”.

Whilst there is no right or wrong and any musician who wants to share their music with packed stadiums is no better nor worse than him, I love that he is so true to who he is.

𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 #𝟑: Stay true to who you are. Know yourself fully. Don’t be swayed by what others believe you should do. Remain deeply loyal to what feels aligned to YOU.
