‘Bomb Shelters’ in Switzerland

One of several things that I found fascinating when I arrived in Switzerland was the amount of ‘bomb shelters’ it has.
Most houses and apartment buildings have them and they are used for storage. No one ever imagined that they might one day be used for their real purpose.
Last night when I was in my basement, the reality of what is happening hit me.
I looked inside this one in my building and imagined how it must feel for the many Ukrainians who are living in one right now. It’s still so hard to believe that it’s happening ?
Anyway, I thought I’d share some info on the background of Switzerland’s ‘nuclear fallout shelters’ which is apparently the correct name for them.
Switzerland is unique in having enough nuclear fallout shelters to accommodate its entire population, should they ever be needed.
This right is enshrined in the constitution:
“Every inhabitant must have a protected place that can be reached quickly from his place of residence”.
“Apartment block owners are required to construct and fit-out shelters in all new dwellings”.
(Articles 45 and 46 of the Swiss Federal Law on Civil Protection).
In practice, when new houses and apartments are built without bunkers, the owners have to contribute a tax to their commune to secure a place in a civil defense shelter.
Let’s hope we never have to use them for their intended purpose. Praying for those who are ?.
